Rank / Trophies

After a ranked match you will gain or lose some rank, also known as trophies.
These rank points are used in the leaderboard and for displaying your league everywhere.

Ranked match

There are a lot of required conditions for a match to be ranked.
Most importantly all quickplay matches are ranked and for custom matches the following conditions must be met.

  • Rank must be enabled in match settings
  • More than 4 players
  • No more than 8 players
  • For teams, unequal team members
  • No bots
  • Target score is not set to quick
  • Map size must be default or big
  • Pickups are not set to custom
  • Powers are not set to custom
  • Third/extra power disabled
  • No modifiers
  • Not camp mode

In the lobby screen you will see an icon next to the player list which tells you if the match is ranked or not.
If the match is unranked you can hover over the icon to see the reason why it's unranked.

Gaining / losing rank

When playing a ranked match you will gain or lose some rank points at the end of the match.
The amount of rank points you gain or lose mostly depends on your final position in the match.
It also depends on the rank of your opponents and how much bonus rank you have.

For example if your opponents are very strong you could still gain rank if you end up at the 4th place.
IF your opponents were weaker than you then you would lose rank at the 4th place.

Certainty

Alongside your rank we store rank certainty for every player which is used to calculate the expected rank for gaining / losing rank.
The more matches you play the more certain we can be of your rank.
When we are not very certain about your rank yet then you can gain / lose more rank points.
This way you will reach the rank that matches with your skill quicker.

Bonus rank

As a new player you start with 500 bonus rank and 1200 normal rank points.
Your visual rank which you see everywhere in the game is your rank minus the bonus rank. vr = rank - bonus
This means that you start with 800 visual rank.

While you have bonus rank points you will gain more rank at the end of a ranked match.
Some of your bonus rank points will then be converted to normal rank points till your bonus rank is depleted.

Rank decay

When you are inactive for a week and you have more than 1500 visual rank your rank will decay.
The rank will be decayed with 15 rank points each week of inactivity.
The rank you lose due to decay are converted to bonus points.
This means that if you are active again you can easily gain these rank points back.

Matchmaking rank

The rank you see in the game is not exactly the rank used for matchmaking.
The rank for matchmaking is only updated when you play quickplay matches when you receive a crate.
This matchmaking rank is hidden and you can not see this anywhere in the game as it's not very relevant.

Grandmaster leaderboard

In the top menu bar you can find a button for the top 100.
The top 100 players become a grandmaster so on this leaderboard you can see the 100 grandmasters.
For each gamemode there is a different leaderboard.
